The Obama-administration could not be cosier with Tehran: In his inaugural speech, the President underlined his willingness to talk to former enemies, his aides have repeated his offer ever since as Mr. Obama addressed the Iranian people. Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joyfully pointed to common interests of the US and Iran in Afghanistan (like stopping the drug trade)

Iran has reacted coolly, condemning the troop surge in Afghanistan and reviving the memory of American “crimes” in the Middle East. Still, it has to admit internally that the American charme-offensive has put it under pressure to be more open to the West –though its nuclear ambitions are non-negotiable for Tehran and the people of Iran.

Things could get better if somebody else than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wins the presidential election in June, though a nasty turn of events is likely if Iran resists the international call for opening up its nuclear plans. If the open approach fails, Mr. Obama’s embrace could turn into a chokehole on Tehran as the US could somewhat justified claim it had tried everything and switch to increasing international sanctions or even a military intervention (by Israel as a proxy), a step Israel’s new prime minister would surely not want to rule out.

Mr. Obama’s approach might sound reasonable to the West, but its success and appreciations by Iran’s leaders and people is less than certain  – after all, the Middle East is offers some of the most unreasonable political situations around the globe.

Da verlängert die Regierung die Abwrackprämie, die Manifestation einer kurzfristig denkenden Wegwerf-Gesellschaft, eine zweifelhafte Volksbeglückung ohne klimapolitischen Nutzen. Wird die HRE-Enteignung nicht nur zur möglicherweise kostspieligen Hängepartie, sondern die ganze Angelegenheit ob der Verjährungsfristen auch in zweifelhaftes Licht getaucht, ohne dass vom Wahlkampf-Untersuchungsausshuss erhellende Tatsachen zu erwarten wären.

Die Alternativen zur Systemerhaltung sind nur noch, dem Steuerzahler entweder die Risiken direkt aufladen (siehe das “Cash-for-Trash”-Programm von US-Finanzminsiter Timothy Geithner) oder das Geld lieber über ein Industriekabinett zu verteilen, damit auch ja alle die Hand aufhalten können, zukunftsfähig oder nicht. Was passiert, wenn die Industrie mit am Tisch sitzen darf, zeigt sich an anderer Stelle: Hatte noch jemand daran geglaubt, dass die Stromversorger ihre Netze abgeben müssen? Die Idee, die am Strommarkt endlich zu etwas Wettbewerb hätte führen können, ist vom Tisch.

Über die diletantische Idee, mit Netzsperren dem sexuellen Missbrauch von Kindern den Garaus machen zu können, will ich garnicht viele Worte verlieren – das haben andere bereits getan.

Während mir es inzwischen immer schwerer fällt, solche politische Nachrichten nicht als Realsatire aufzufassen, wächst weltweit die Wut, auch in Europa. Ohne Ziel, ohne Utopie, einfach nur Menschen, die um die Reste ihrer postindustriellen Existenz bangen. Ernüchternde Aussichten. Der Kopfzeiler ist nun wieder regelmäßiger online.

As tragic as they are, the recent killings in Northern Ireland will not lead to a return to the country’s violent past.

On Christmas Eve 2007 I wrote a very optimistic posting about the future of Northern Ireland. Despite two assassinations in two days, I remain optimistic. As tragic and senseless as the acts of some IRA splinter-groups (”Continuity IRA“ , which split in 1994 and the “Real IRA”, founded in 1997) may be, this is not the seventies.

The actions may have been triggered by the deployment of an underground intelligence unit to keep track of the groups’ future plans. It may lead to other militants to prove their determination to hurt everyone who is ready to compromise and follow the Good Friday Agreement, most notably deputy first minister Martin McGuinness, who is seen as a traitor.

In the long run, things might calm down, though: The former IRA’s political wing Sinn Fein is sharing power with the Democratic Unionists, and the militants do not have much support in the Catholic community. Ulster’s younger generation does not know what these groups are even fighting for, though the economic downturn could remilitarize them.

Northern Ireland may have to live with occasional eruptions of violence: It will remain on its way to peace if all elements of the Good Friday Agreement come into force and let the violent past seem like a relict from another century.

Was sollen wir mit einem Promi-Holocaustleugner in Großbritannien tun? Ihn einfach nicht beachten!

In den vergangenen Wochen hat die mediale Weltöffentlichkeit gezeigt, wie aus einem Spinner ein Märtyrer gemacht werden kann. Und Piusbruder-Bischof und Holocaust-Leugner Richard Williamson ist ein Spinner, dem auch seine Robe keine Autorität geben kann.

Wenn die Medien ihn publikumswirksam bei seiner Ankunft in Großbritannien in Szene setzen, wenn die Europäische Union überlegt, Williamson juristisch zur Verantwortung zu ziehen, dann wird aus dem Hetzer in der Meinung der Öffentlichkeit schnell der Gehetzte, ein Underdog.

Wir sollten ihm diese Rolle nicht gönnen und Williamson ignorieren. Sollte er auf deutschen Boden kommen und den Holocaust leugnen, werden zu Recht die Handschnellen klicken. Gleichzeitig wäre es ein Fehler, nun auf einheitliche EU-Regelungen zur Holocaustleugnung zu pochen: Die freie Rede ist in Großbritannien ein anderes Gut als in Deutschland, ist in Schweden nicht zu vergleichen mit dem Recht auf freie Rede in Frankreich. Wenn wir nun beginnen, im Vereinheitlichungswahn die kulturellen Traditionen und gewachsenen Sitten über Bord zu schmeißen, richten wir mehr Unheil an, als dass wir Ordnung stiften würden.

Es mag für aufgeklärte Menschen hierzulande kein gute Gefühl sein, dass Williamson die verschiedenen Gesetze innerhalb der Europäischen Union ausnutzt; dass sie in ihrer Vielfalt existieren, ist ein Zeichen dafür, dass unsere Demokratie funktioniert und Pluralität erlaubt, um jeder Art von Totalitarismus und Gesinnungszensur vorzubeugen.
